Update on Recent Tragedy from Ron & Katie Luce

Dear Family and Friends,

As you may have seen or heard in the news media over the weekend, this last Friday afternoon a small plane carrying five passengers crashed in rural southeastern Kansas en route to an Acquire The Fire event in Council Bluffs, Iowa. So it is with a heavy heart that I stop for a moment to write this quick note—to update you on the situation and ask for your prayers.

As you would expect, the last couple of days have been a blur of shock and sadness and concern. But I know that reports of this tragedy have been all over the news and that as a friend of this ministry you would be profoundly concerned. So I wanted to get a quick note to you now to share our hearts and to help you know how to pray in the days ahead.

There is much we don’t yet know. But we do know that when the plane went down, three of the five on board died at the scene. These were (pilot) Luke Sheets, Garrett Coble and Stephen Luth. Hannah and the fifth passenger, Austin Anderson, a Marine who had served two tours of duty in Iraq, were able to escape from the burning plane and walk to a nearby roadway to get help.

However, both Hannah and Austin suffered severe injuries and were life-flighted to hospitals in Kansas City and Wichita, respectively. Hannah was listed in serious but stable condition, suffering primarily from burns on 28% of her body. Austin’s burn injuries were far more severe, especially those sustained to his lungs. At about 5:30 a.m. Saturday, Austin went to be with the Lord.

We believe he helped Hannah out of the plane and to the roadside. Not only is he a hero for serving our nation, we probably owe our daughter’s life to his courage and strength.

Of course, the entire Teen Mania family is mourning the loss of these four young lives. They were so full of promise and love for God. All were friends of Teen Mania, and two of them, Austin and Stephen, were only recently hired to join our marketing team.  Katie and I will share additional updates as we can. For now I would ask that you help us by lifting some very specific needs to the Father in prayer.

Right now our most intense concern is for the families of those who died. Please pray that God surrounds the families of Austin, Stephen, Luke and Garrett with His supernatural love and peace in this tremendously difficult time.

Also, as the Lord leads, please pray for a quick and supernatural recovery for our Hannah. As of today, the update on her condition is one of improvement. She is recovering well at a hospital in Kansas City. This morning, the doctors took her off the ventilator and she is breathing on her own. They have removed the tube from her throat so that she will be able to speak. She is growing stronger, more coherent and is asking questions. The burning and soot in her lungs has been suctioned out and is healing up. The doctors are reporting the damage will not be long term.

It is truly a miracle that she is alive. Grief counselors will be seeing Hannah throughout the next few weeks; as her heart is heavy with the grief for the loss of her friends. She will be beginning skin graft surgeries right away for the third degree burns she sustained on the back of her hands and her lower left leg.

Please hold us up in prayer. If you have friends or loved ones whom you know to be effective intercessors, please feel free to forward this message to them with an encouragement to lift us up.

Romans 8:28, family. Paul said to die is to live. Our brothers went ahead of us and they are now in a place we can only pray to one day be. While the human side wonders the agony they might’ve experienced while this plane descended, my spirit shows me faces, minds and hearts that are in peace understanding that the outcome is something we might not understand, but is the perfect Will of God. We related Death to a bad thing, even the word itself looks horrible in writing, but in essence how bad is it really? Im honored to have served with Teen Mania, and Im privileged to be part of the Body of Christ. Our main goal in life is to spread the Gospel, yank people out of the devil’s grasp and fill Heaven with every single person possible. We are now assured that atleast there will be 4 in Heaven. See you soon family! Stay strong and positive, because God is in control!

The Lord is our refuge and our protector, our shield, and our strength. The Lord looks for those who will stand up in the Gap and Teen Mania has been standing in that gap. Ron and your family is protected by the Lord and He is using this to advance His kingdom even more and bring glory to His name through all of your lives and the lives that are now with the Lord. God is with us always and forever. He is good all the time and faithful. Prayers with all of the families that have a loved one now with the Lord. Even though they are in a better place we will miss them while we are still here to continue out the Lord`s will. Sincerely from another brother in christ, Jesse, on a mission to save the lost. Amen.

You and your ministry have meant a lot to my family and to my church youth group. I will be praying and have my church pray for the families of those who’ve gone on to be with the Lord. May His Holy Spirit, the Comforter, hold them through these days and months ahead. We will also be praying for Hannah. I remember seeing her with you sometimes onstage at Acquire the Fire and she is a beautiful girl. May God give you strength and comfort as you minister to her in the days ahead. God bless you. Love in Him, Darlene Woodard

  • Sandra

There are many hearts and prayers joined with you, Hannah, and the families of these precious loved ones. May there be a harvest who “acquire the fire” from the seeds of the mighty ones that have departed, and may the love of God abound.

  • Deb Cauley, Sp. Deputy District Coroner

I just submitted a “question” on your web site before I saw this place to leave comments. I worked the accident scene and took care of seeing that the bodies were removed and taken care of. I am a pastor’s wife as well as my duties as the Special Deputy District Coroner and I live in Chanute, Kansas, close to the accident site. In my communication that I submitted – I wanted the parents to know that even in the death of their precious children, God allowed me to witness to people at the scene and neighbors around the crash site of God’s love and how reassuring it is to know that these young people will be with the Lord. I shared with them how reassuring it was to know that things happen in the blink of an eye and how important it is to be ready. I told my husband after the long and stressful weekend of working at the scene that what kept me going through all those long stressful hours at the scene was the fact that I knew these young people were with the Lord and Savior that they so lovingly served. I am in awe at how God opened the door for me to witness to people at the scene on their behalf. They have moved to another world but left their witness here with people they never dreamed of impacting with their lives! God Bless the work that you are doing and the families of these four and Hannah will be in our prayers. When I received the call early Saturday morning from the hospital about Austin – My heart sank but I knew God had a plan and would continue to use these people is a dynamic way!
Thanks for letting me share with you my deepest sympathy and yet my celebration of how good God is!!

  • Keith Miller

My prayers go out to all of the families and the staff at Teen Mania. Praise the Lord for the miraculous saving of Hannah’s life and for the heroism of Austin.
